What is student representation?

Student representation allows for the student perspective to be heard on University board and committees and to the State and Federal Governments.

At Swinburne student representatives sit on boards and committees and ensure that the University does not introduce policy which has a negative effect on education or the student experience. Policy can take many forms for example new policy may be introduced which puts forward new fees for students or it may be policy pertaining to academic standards and a students right to appeal an unfair or discriminatory decision. The role of the student representative in these cases will be to argue against the new fee or to propose alterations to policy which erodes student rights. From time to time the University and the student representative from the Student Union disagree on policy direction.

A critical aspect of student representation is ensuring that all elected student representatives regularly contact students and seek out their views, opinions and experiences. This way the student representative is able to harness what the majority of students actually think about any particular issue or for example the quality of their education.

How do I become a student representative?

You can become a student representative by nominating during the annual elections usually held in October each year or during the bi-election which is normally held sometime between March and April each year.

How Is Representation Structured At Swinburne?

The SSU is currently reviewing its representative structure. You can provide us with feedback by filling out our quick survey.

At present however the SSU has as its governing body the SSU Council. The SSU Council has twenty one democratically elected students. The President is the Chair of the Council and the Chief Spokesperson of the organisation. The Constitution says that Council and its committees must meet at least six times per year.

Under the Council there are four standing committees. They are:

1 Secretariat (the Executive arm of the Council) and Chaired by the President
2 Education Board (education matters) and Chaired by the Education Vice President
3 SISA (International Student Committee) Chaired by the SISA President
4 SUPA (Postgraduate Student Committee) Chaired by the SUPA President
