The Swinburne Student Union is the only independent student organisation at Swinburne University . We have a long and proud history at Swinburne University spanning almost thirty years. Our main role is to provide a critical representative voice for the diverse student population and to ensure that student rights are maintained we are governed by an elected Student Representative Council. We are the only fully student controlled organisation at Swinburne University.
Over the years we have successfully lobbied for:
None of these would have been achieved without an independent Student Union on campus! At the moment the union is involved in the capign to put an end to VSU (the federal legislation which is designed to destroy student unions) and fighting to end the discrimination that stops international students from accessing concession cards.
Swinburne Student Union has a proud history of taking a stand on issues that affect students off the campus such as:

Ever since Howard's Voluntary Student Unionism (VSU) Legislation came into effect in 2006, Swinburne University has refused to fund the Student Union in an attempt to remove any student voice on campus. Swiburne University is still collecting Union fees from TAFE and international students yet refuses to release this money to the Union so that we may represent you.
The University has refused to allow the Student Union the right to run most of the services it used to, even our Cafe! Whilst the University has taken these services over (at a higher cost to you) the Student Union still exists as a vibrant independent political body on the campus.
Membership to the Student Union is now voluntary, so fo the Union to campaign for lower fees and against legislation or University policies that impact negatively on our education and our lives, it is necessary for students to sign up to the Union and to pay a membership fee.
With no long-term source of income, it is imperative that you become a financial member, to arm us with the support and resources we need to maintain the continued existence of the Student Union. So support unionism and the right for students to control student afairs and join today!

THERE'S A RANGE OF ON CAMPUS SERVICES TO BENEFIT OUR STUDENT MEMBERS SUCH AS:

Students at Swinburne can purchase either a yearly or half yearly membership. A full years membership is $60. That's only $1 a week! A half yearly membership is $30. If that's too much for you to pay at once, you can pay monthly by direct debit, so even if you're on a low income, you can afford to take up membership.
SUT staff, graduated students and members of the local community can become solidarity members of the Union by purchasing a solidarity membership. The membership offers the same services and discounts as student members but does not include the advocacy service or the legal service. The Solidarity membership does not allow for either nominating in elections or voting in elections however it does provide much needed support for the Student Union to continue being a vibrant part of the Swinburne community. Solidarity memberships are $ 30 until 31-6-2008 $60 until 31-12-2008.
We accept cash, money orders and direct debit! If you select the direct debit option we will provide you with the relevant release forms and deduct your membership by the month!
