HUMAN SACRIFICE THEATRE PRESENTS "THE LATE HENRY MOSS"
Welcome Message From SSU President
Hello and welcome to Swinburne!
I am writing to let you know about our student union, which represents us and advocates on our behalf to the university and government.
If you have any questions, concerns, positive or negative feedback about your experience at Swinburne let us know so we can do our best to improve the quality and affordability of our education and campus services.
The union has a long and proud tradition of organising kickass parties, with bands, bbqs, street theatre and the like so if you are interested in organising an event please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Swinburne decided to cut all funding to the student union in March 2006, and since then we have been totally dependent on student’s support to continue functioning. Please take the time to look through the enclosed membership flyer and consider whether you can afford the $60 we are charging for a year’s membership.
We have job opportunities for students who want to get involved in producing the student magazine, recruiting members, advocacy, campaigns and organising activities. Or pitch us your own idea.
If you want to find out more, just give me a call, send me an email, or check out the ssu website at www.ssu.org.au
Go to http://www.ssu.org.au/minutes/reports.php to read the reports your student union representatives submit at the end of each fortnight, letting you know about the work they have been doing for us.
We are living in a time of pressure. We daily deal with issues like climate change, low Austudy payments, incredibly high fees for international students, increases to HECS, increases to the cost of living for things such as rent, food and public transport and the casualisation of the workforce at Swinburne which is affecting the quality, integrity and reputation of the courses we are studying.
On top of all this we face attacks on our very ability to organise collectively and voice our opinions, with civil liberties and unions under attack..
By uniting and helping each other we can build on the victories students have had in the past. Our student union has stopped courses from being eradicated at Swinburne, stopped students from being unfairly excluded from their course and has been at the forefront of progressive change to benefit the poor and disadvantaged.
For the benefit of not just all of us who will be studying in 2008, but for the students who come after us, I strongly urge you to get in touch with me, and make time in your already busy schedules to participate in standing up for our rights together.
I understand that these days most of us need to work whenever we aren’t studying in order to keep a roof over our heads, but I hope you can make the time to find out a little bit more about how our student union works on our behalf.
Yours in solidarity,
Caspar Cumming
